Farewell to an Icon: Remembering Tony Todd and His Timeless Legacy in Film and Television

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome all, today we say goodbye to another Hollywood legend. Tony Todd Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., grew up with a passion for the arts. He went to the University of Connecticut, where he received formal training in acting. Todd continued his studies at the prestigious Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute, further honing his acting skills. Todd got his big break when he landed a roll as Ben in Tom Savini’s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. This would lead Todd into the Candyman franchise.

I was not a big fan of Horror movies growing up in the eighties and missed out on a lot of the big eighties franchise movies. I was 17 when Candyman hit theaters and I would have to say this is one of the first horror movies my friends and I went to watch in theaters. I won’t lie I have not watched the most recent Candyman Films, but I will be checking them out. Todd did have some other memorable performances in The Crow, The Rock, and an another memorable roll for me as Sergeant Warren in the classic Vietnam movie Platoon. Todd has also made several television appearances on popular series such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager.

He played various characters in the Star Trek universe, most notably Worf’s brother Kurn. Todd also had several appearances on popular shows like Night Court, MacGyver, Beverly Hills 90210, and Smallville. Also rounding out his skills he had several voice rolls in series such as The Flash, Be Cool Scooby Doo, and Masters of the Universe Revelation, as Scare Glow. Tony Todd’s 44 year career has gotten an early curtain call as he lost his battle with cancer. Your legacy will be forever remembered in the many awesome works you have left the world with. RIP Mr. Tony Todd.
